Jaipur known by its sobriquet ‘pink city’ and historically rendered as Jeypore is the state capital of Rajasthan in India. Jaipur was founded on a citadel of ascendant stars by an enlightened ruler who saw a brighter future for his people on an emerging trade route as against an existing capital in a military retreat in the fortified township of Amber.
Today more so than ever before, Jaipur reflects the grand plan of its ruler and his vision for his people, for he set in motion a vision document of prosperity and excellence.History records Jaipur’s founder to be the precocious boy king Maharaja Jai Singh II of Amber and medieval records speak of his exploits at the Mughal court where he astounded Emperor Aurangazeb with his quick repartee, thus earning the honorific prefix of Sawai (One and a quarter times more accomplished) for future rulers of his Kachwaha clan.
The majesty and grandeur of today’s Jaipur is the synthesis of the union of ideas between an enlightened Maharaja and the expertise of his chief architect and planner, Vidyadhar. Built of pink stucco in imitation of sandstone, Jaipur is remarkable among pre-modern Indian cities for the width and regularity of its streets and its structured appearance. The city is laid out into quarters, separated by broad streets 111 ft. wide. The urban quarters are further divided by networks of girded streets. The City Palace quarters maintain its pre eminent position enclosing the sprawling Hawa Mahal (palace of winds) complex, which dominates the walled cites skyline along with Sawai Jai Singh’s scientific observatory the Jantar Mantar.
Sawai Jai Singh’s prowess in setting up a new city is reflected in almost all his deeds as a pragmatic ruler and as a ruthless planner, however the move to Jaipur in 1727, was a political masterstroke to effectively demonstrate his independence & supremacy after the waning of the Mughal Empire following Emperor Aurangazeb’s death. |
